Suspect arrested in connection to jewellery store thefts in Quebec

Laval police (SPL) arrested a man in connection to several jewellery store thefts in the Greater Montreal, Eastern Townships and Central Quebec area.

Alain Jr. Bernecky, 45, was arrested on Oct. 2, and faces two charges of theft over $5,000. Three searches were carried out and officers seized objects linking him to the alleged crimes.

He remains in custody and is expected to return to court on Oct. 28.

In August, a jewellery store was robbed, and the suspect allegedly ran off with a display case containing around 20 chains – each worth between $800 and $1,000 – after asking the store clerk to look a gold chain.

Shortly afterwards, the suspect allegedly committed the same crime at another jewelry store in Laval.

“Combined information from several other police departments also revealed that the suspect had committed six thefts between July and September, for a total of nearly $100,000 in stolen jewelry,” said the SPL in a press release.
