A woman is dead after a fire broke out in her apartment in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough of Montreal on Friday morning. Authorities say the smoke detector was not working.
The blaze started just after 10:40 a.m. in a three-storey building on Aird Ave, but was contained to just one unit.
The victim was taken to hospital by emergency services, where her death was confirmed.
Montreal police (SPVM) have taken over the investigation, but the cause of the fire is still unknown.
