Montreal airport wants injunction against Saint-Hubert competitor over name change

Aéroports de Montréal (ADM), which operates Montréal-Trudeau International Airport, is suing its Saint-Hubert competitor, claiming that its rebranding will confuse travellers.

ADM has applied to the Quebec Superior Court for a permanent injunction to force the new Aéroport métropolitain de Montréal, or MET, to change its name.

Formerly known as Montreal Saint-Hubert Airport, it changed its name earlier this year after announcing a partnership with Porter Airlines for a new $200 million terminal capable of handling up to four million domestic travellers a year.

ADM spokesperson Eric Forest argues that MET is too similar to the name of Montreal Island International Airport, which carried over 21 million passengers in 2023.

MET vice president Simon-Pierre Diamond argues that the airport authority is trying to protect a “monopoly” on the name of Montreal and on passengers travelling in the metropolitan region.

The new MET terminal is located around 15 kilometers from downtown Montreal and is scheduled to open in the summer of 2025.
