Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime defeats Medvedev to reach quarter-finals in Paris

Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime reached the quarter-finals of the men’s singles tournament at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday.

Auger-Aliassime, seeded 13th, defeated No. 4 Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6 (5) in a third-round duel.

He needed one hour and 38 minutes of play to do so.

Auger-Aliassime defeated Medvedev for the first time in their eighth career duel – but their first on clay.

In the next round, Auger-Aliassime will play the winner of the duel between sixth seed Casper Ruud of Norway and Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina.

Auger-Aliassime lost in the first round at the Tokyo Games three years ago.

On Wednesday, he was served well by his returns. The 23-year-old Quebecer also continued to shine on serve, not giving up a break point to his rival in his third match in a row.

Auger-Aliassime was also due to play later in the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles with Ontario’s Gabriela Dabrowski. They meet Americans and third seeds Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff.

In the women’s doubles, Quebec’s Leylah Annie Fernandez and Dabrowski, seeded fifth, were eliminated in the second round. They lost 6-4, 6-0 to neutral Individual Athletes Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider.
