Quebec places the Mauricie-et-du-Centre-du-Quebec Youth Protection Division under trusteeship

Minister of Social Services Lionel Carmant has placed the Youth Protection Branch (DPJ) of Mauricie-et-du-Centre-du-Québec under trusteeship.

This decision follows a shocking report by La Presse published Wednesday morning, which revealed a number of serious shortcomings on the part of the region’s DPJ.

In particular, it was reported that the rights of dozens of children had been violated.

For the minister, this situation is “intolerable.”

“What upsets me the most is that it’s against the guidelines that we set up,” said Carmant at the National Assembly on Wednesday morning.

“I’ve been here for six years and I’ve been saying for six years that we need to do more prevention. We need to support parents. We mustn’t take parents away from children, and when I read this this morning, I’m disturbed.”

This report by The Canadian Press was first published in French on Oct. 9, 2024.
