The deer that was stuck on unopened REM tracks has been tranquilized and removed from the tracks, an REM spokesperson confirmed to The Gazette Friday.

The deer had been stuck on tracks between Pointe-Claire and Kirkland and was to be transported to a wooded area in Kirkland and released.

Wildlife Preservation Canada workers arrived to tranquilize the deer, spokesperson Francis Labbé said. Construction workers had initially been working with Animal Rescue with the goal of gently coaxing the deer westward to a natural area, but Animal Rescue eventually decided to call in Wildlife Preservation Canada.

“You don’t want to scare the animal more than you need to,” he said.

The deer wasn’t in any danger, Labbé said.

“There wasn’t any testing today.”

The tracks were empty and the overhead wires were not electrified.

REM workers discovered a broken fence in Kirkland where the deer is assumed to have gained access to the tracks. That fence is now fixed, Labbé said.
