Protesters from the environmental group Last Generation Canada blocked a road to the drop-off area for departures at Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport on Wednesday, causing delays in accessing the site.

Montreal police received a call from airport security to assist with the protesters around 10:30 a.m. and according to an update just before 1 p.m., the intervention was ongoing, said SPVM spokesperson Antony Dorelas.

He said half the protesters left when police arrived, but the other half stayed.

Jacob Pirro, a spokesperson for the group, said three protesters had glued their hands to the pavement to block access to the airport.

In an Instagram post advertising the protest, Last Generation Canada wrote: “Oil kills, we refuse to die.”

“We are part of an international uprising to end oil by 2030,” the post reads, noting actions were co-ordinated Wednesday in Germany, the United Kingdom, Norway, Switzerland, Austria and Finland. “We are demanding our government endorse the fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty proposal and implement a national firefighting agency.”

The airport remains open and operational, and no impact on flights has been reported, but travellers heading there are asked to check its website for instructions.

In an email, airport spokesperson Eric Forest said “measures are in place to remedy this situation as quickly as possible.”

“We invite users to make use of the express drop-offs zone at parking lots P4 and P10.”
