Equipment failure knocks out power to tens of thousands in West Island

Article content

More than 60,000 West Island residents lost power Tuesday evening, after Hydro-Québec’s Des Sources power station experienced an equipment failure.

“Our crews are working on the situation and restoring power. The power outages should be resolved quickly during the evening,” the utility wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

As of 7 p.m., there were 37,000 customers in the Montreal agglomeration without power, compared to fewer than 600 in the rest of the province. Half an hour later, power had resumed to most areas and by 7:45 p.m., all but 1,000 customers had their power restored.
