Five-alarm fire hits three buildings in Verdun

One hundred and twenty-five firefighters responded to a major fire in Verdun Thursday afternoon.

By early Thursday evening, the fire was under control and the fire department and other services were working on making sure everyone affected had somewhere to stay for the night.

The fire started just before 3 p.m. at the corner of 1st Ave. and Wellington St. It started on the second floor of a triplex and spread to a balcony, then the two other triplexes.

One person suffered from smoke inhalation but was not sent to the hospital. Three firefighters had issues due to the extreme heat. Six families were helped by the Red Cross and the rest were given aid by their families. Nine apartments that were damaged by the fire.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing.
