Former Montreal North mayor Marcel Parent has died. Parent served as president of the borough from 2001 to 2005 and its first mayor from 2005 to 2009. He passed away Thursday at the age of 92.

“Mr. Parent loved public service,” said Montreal North mayor Christine Black in a statement. “As councillor, as mayor of Montreal North and as MNA in the riding of Sauvé, he served our population with integrity, compassion and devotion. The borough offers its sincere condolences to his family, friends and those who had the privilege of knowing him.”

Parent served as Liberal MNA for Sauvé from 1984 to 1998 and was a member of Montreal’s city council from 2001 to 2009. He also served as president of the Montreal Catholic School Commission from 1983 to 1984.

Parent’s legacy as borough mayor includes: an outdoor rink in Le Carignan, built in collaboration with the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation; the creation of an urbanism service; construction of the Maison culturelle et communautaire de Montréal-Nord (including a library and performance hall); the creation of two parks (Langelier-Marie Victorin and Garon-Amos) and three school parks (Jules Verne, Saint-Rémi and Sainte-Gertrude); and a bus line for the elderly, put in place with help from Montreal’s transit authority and the Association québécoise de défense des droits des personnes retraitées et préretraitées.

Commemorative events will be organized in Parent’s honour. Details are to be announced shortly.
