Showers on Wednesday afternoon will cause a brief, but temporary, break in the heat: It will return on Thursday with humidex values of close to 40

Heat and humidity are likely to continue until Friday.

During periods of great heat, one’s health and the health of one’s family can deteriorate rapidly, warns the Quebec health ministry and Environment Canada. The agencies recommend the following actions to protect yourself:

  • Drink six to eight glasses of water per day — even before feeling thirsty — unless your physician’s instructions regarding the appropriate amount of fluid are different.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages and caffeine.
  • Spend at least two hours a day, if possible, in an air-conditioned or cool place.
  • Take at least one cool shower or bath each day or cool your skin with a wet towel several times per day.
  • Limit physical activity.
  • Wear light clothes.

Never leave an infant or a child alone in a vehicle or a poorly ventilated room — even for a few minutes.

Check in with loved ones, particularly those who are dependent, disabled, mentally ill or living alone — and be prepared to help them should they need help.

Remember, just as heat affects us, it can also affect the health of pets.

Call Info-Santé at 811 with any questions about your health, or ask a health care provider.

In case of emergency, call 911.
