Longueuil police on Thursday morning were urging the public to avoid the intersection of St. Charles St. E. and Roland Therrien Blvd. in the Vieux-Longueuil district as they engaged in a stand-off with an individual who was behaving and speaking in a “threatening” manner.

Police spokesperson François Boucher said the operation began at 3:30 a.m. in response to a report of an individual who had behaved in a “violent” manner during a dispute.

The individual, a man in his 40s who is known to police and believed to be armed, is in the middle of a police perimeter thrown up around the intersection and the force’s SWAT team has been deployed as part of the operation.

Boucher said police were hoping for a peaceful end to the stand-off.
