Longueuil police detour traffic during standoff with ‘threatening’ individual

A man who Longueuil police said was acting in a violent manner prompted them to close off a major intersection for several hours until he was taken into custody Thursday afternoon.

Police spokesperson François Boucher said the man surrendered himself to police following negotiations.

“We were initially called to intervene following a conjugal conflict in the St-Hubert borough. The individual fled the area in a stolen vehicle. When our officers located the vehicle a police chase followed and continued to the intersection of St-Charles St. E. and Roland Therrien Blvd. (in the Vieux-Longueuil district),” Boucher said.

Beginning at 3:30 a.m., officers engaged in a stand-off with the individual who was behaving and speaking in a “threatening” manner, Longueuil police said. This caused the closure of the intersection.

The individual, a man in his 40s who is known to police, found himself in the middle of a police perimeter thrown up around the intersection and the force’s tactical team was deployed as part of the operation.

The man was arrested some time before 2 p.m.

Boucher said the man might be charged with forcible confinement, uttering threats and theft of a vehicle. He also said any traffic problems caused by the closure of the intersection should be resolved soon.
