A man in his 50s died Saturday afernoon after falling out of a tree in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, in Quebec’s Montérégie region, according to Sûreté du Québec (SQ) spokesperson Élizabeth Marquis-Guy.
Emergency services were called at 3:30 p.m., she said.
“According to initial information, a man in his 50s was cutting branches before he fell,” Marquis-Guy said on Saturday evening. “He was transported to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.”
It was not clear whether the man was cutting branches in a tree on his property or working as a treecutter on someone else’s property, she said on Sunday.
Hydro-Québec equipment was damaged in the incident, although the police did not say how, and power was cut to repair the equipment.
A police investigation is underway, said Marquis-Guy and the coroner will be involved. An SQ investigator and a forensic identification technician were on hand Saturday to analyze the scene to try to understand the causes and circumstances of the event.
