McGill University is lifting the additional security restrictions put in place in the lead-up to Oct. 7, the one-year anniversary of Hamas’s attack on Israel and the beginning of Israel’s retaliation.
“Conditions relating to campus/building access, classes, remote work, etc., will return to usual as of Saturday, Oct. 12,” the university said in an email to students and staff Friday. “No restrictions will be in place.”

The university said that as of Saturday all classes will be in person and staff will resume normal schedules.
McGill has been at the centre of pro-Palestinian activism in Montreal over the past year, with protesters urging the university to divest from companies they say are complicit in war and genocide.
The university beefed up security on Oct. 5, restricting access to people with McGill IDs on its campuses ahead of pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian events on Oct. 7.
That day, numerous protesters broke through security and marched through the campus. Windows were broken in at least two buildings. McGill said a security guard was assaulted.
In the wake of those incidents, a judge issued a temporary injunction, effective until Oct. 17, that bans disruptive protests on McGill’s campus or within five metres of its buildings.
The order, granted on Wednesday, prohibits protesters from blocking entrances and exits, and it specifically bars any intimidation, harassment or threats toward McGill students, staff and visitors.
Protesters must also refrain from “blocking or otherwise obstructing or hindering” entrances and exits of McGill buildings.
In addition, the injunction prohibits protest activities within five metres of any McGill building and says protesters must not intimidate, harass or threaten McGill students, employers and visitors as they enter or exit McGill buildings.
