Montreal asks police to investigate east-end oil spill

The city has asked its police force to determine the source of an oil spill that was found last month in the St. Lawrence river, in the Rivière-des-Prairies—Pointe-aux-Trembles borough.

The city first noticed the oil slick in the river on July 11, located between 13th Ave. and Tricentenaire Blvd. An analysis indicated it was motor oil, and the Coast Guard said it mobilized the Urgence Marine Environnement company, “which deployed booms to contain the spill.”

The Canadian Wildlife Service and Environment and Climate Change Canada were also contacted by the Canadian Coast Guard “regarding the soiled birds observed in the region.” The city said drinking water was not affected by the spill.

In a statement, the city said analyses have concluded that the spill happened between June 27 and July 10 in a storm sewer located on Tricentenaire Blvd.

Anyone with information about the spill is asked to contact police. About 19,000 litres of water was removed from the river, containing 1,000 litres of oil, the city said.
