Montreal doctor testifying in own defence calls sexual assault accusations false

A Montreal doctor on trial at the Montreal courthouse, where he is charged with sexual assault, called it a case of “false accusations” as he testified in his own defence on Tuesday.

Stephan Probst, 46, is alleged to have sexually assaulted a young woman inside his penthouse on Aug. 28, 2020, with the help of a woman named Wendy Devera, 30, who is also on trial. Both are charged with sexual assault with help from another person.

Probst, a doctor who has worked at the Jewish General Hospital and is listed as an assistant professor on McGill University’s website, began his testimony by answering questions from one of the two defence lawyers about his relationship with Devera.

“We were sex friends. That is to say, friends who had sex on a regular basis,” Probst said of their relationship in 2020.

He said he met Devera in 2018 through a dating site, either Bumble or Tinder.

“Today, me and Ms. Devera are a monogamous couple, exclusive, very standard,” Probst said.

Probst also said that after experiencing “an enormous amount of highs and lows” he and Devera decided to live together in 2022 “after the false accusations.” They were arrested in 2021.

“Now, in 2024, there is no one else in our sex life. We are a monogamous couple, exclusive. We live together,” Probst said.

“In 2020, we were not a couple. I had sexual relations with other women, including threesomes without Wendy. Wendy was, for the most part, OK with this except that there were certain women she was jealous of. When I would hide things, she would get angry.

“I slept with Wendy on a regular basis and I had threesomes with Wendy on a regular basis,” he testified.

“The number (of threesomes) I can give you is really approximate because I never counted. If I had to give you a number, it is in the 40s, before the night with (the complainant).”

Some of Probst’s testimony supported what the complainant said at the start of the trial last week. He said the woman met Devera through Bumble and the two made arrangements to meet at his place. He said he was informed that the young woman was interested in having sex with Devera alone.

Probst also said Devera and the complainant both consumed 30 mg of Ecstasy shortly after the young woman arrived at his penthouse at 9:30 p.m.

“It was the standard dose for Wendy. It was the standard dose when we met with someone,” he said. “It was the go-to dose.”
