Montreal police say they’ve arrested a 16-year-old in connection with the murder of a 42-year-old man last February.

Police say the youth was arrested in Kitchener, Ont., where he is currently incarcerated for an armed robbery committed with a firearm.

The youth will be charged with first-degree murder, Montreal police said Thursday.

Stevens Cantave was shot multiple times in the parking lot of a Dollard-des-Ormeaux shopping mall early in the evening of Feb. 6. He was declared dead on the scene.

Two suspects fled the scene of the shooting in a stolen vehicle, police said. The vehicle was recovered the following day and since then, investigators have been gathering evidence, which eventually allowed them to indentify the 16-year-old suspect as the alleged shooter, according to police.

Montreal police investigators travelled to Kingston where they arrested the youth Thursday at a detention centre. He is expected to appear in youth court by videoconference.

Cantave, who had a criminal record, was alleged to have been a member of a street gang operating in western Montreal.

His death was the fifth murder reported on Montreal Island in 2024.
