Anthony Curotte, of Kahnawake, is charged with first-degree murder and was scheduled to appear at the Montreal courthouse on Wednesday.
According to the charge sheet in the case, Salagan was killed the day before police discovered her body.
Court records show Curotte was on probation when he was arrested for the homicide.
On May 25, 2023, he pleaded guilty to assault and trespassing at the Longueuil courthouse and was sentenced to a 60-day prison term to be followed by two years of probation. The trespassing charge was filed as a conjugal violence case.
Curotte was also recently charged with intimidation and uttering threats at the Valleyfield courthouse. On July 2, he was granted a release after he agreed to deposit $300 and follow a series of conditions. He pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Police did not provide any information about whether the suspect and victim knew each other on Wednesday.
Salagan’s killing was the 21st homicide in Montreal this year.
