A Montreal man who rapped under the name KGoon before his arrest three years ago was sentenced Monday to an 80-month prison term for pumping bullets into the wall of a bar in St-Henri.

Quebec Court Judge Thierry Nadon agreed with a common suggestion from lawyers on both sides of the case in which Brandon Buissereth, 29, was found guilty last year of discharging a firearm with the intent to injure a person, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm.

Shortly before 1 a.m. on June 18, 2021, Buissereth fired five shots into the front exterior wall of Bar Riverside on St-Ambroise St. and along the Lachine Canal. He also fired shots into two vehicles that were parked nearby. Part of the shooting was captured on video by a camera installed in a vehicle that happened to be passing by at the time. When he found Buissereth guilty last year, Nadon said it was clear his intent was to injure someone outside the bar.

Two of the first police officers who responded to 911 calls reporting the gunfire spotted Buissereth running away from the bar, and he was arrested at the crime scene. At the time, Buissereth was rapping under the name KGoon, a name he still goes by on Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Prosecutor Delphine Mauger and defence lawyer Ouissam Akhrif agreed that Buissereth should be sentenced to a total of 2,429 days. With the time that he has served since his arrest, Buissereth has 665 days left to serve. The prison term will be followed by three years of probation.

“I worked on myself, on me, the best of my thoughts and on my body,” Buissereth said when he was asked by the judge if he had any comments to make before a decision was made on the sentence. “I tried to see the positive instead of the negative. I learned from my mistakes, and I need to work on my future because my future will be big.

“These are just words, but it’s time to put them into action.”

Buissereth’s arrest made headlines in 2021 after the Journal de Montréal revealed that he and his brother Jordan, who also has a criminal record, were among three men former Montreal mayor Denis Coderre posed with for a photo that ended up being posted on Coderre’s Instagram page when he was seeking re-election in 2021. The men and Coderre posed for the photo while at a park in the Sud-Ouest borough.

Buissereth already had a criminal record when the photo was posted, but he was arrested as a suspect in the shooting at the bar just weeks after it appeared on Coderre’s Instagram account.
