Rainfall amounts of 15 to 25 millimetres — and up to 40 mm in some areas — will put even more pressure on rain-battered infrastructure, Environment Canada warned Wednesday morning.

Similar statements were issued for the South Shore, lower Laurentians and Laurentides.

“Please remain vigilant in the event of heavy rain,” says the statement, which warns that ponding is possible in low-lying areas where the soil is already saturated..

The rain should turn to showers by Thursday and then clear up completely for a couple of days.

Expect a high of 15 C during the day Wednesday, with a UV index of 2, or low. At night, a low of 13 C. The average high for Aug. 21 is 24.4 C.

Meanwhile in the Pacific

Gilma became the second hurricane of this year’s eastern Pacific Ocean season early Wednesday and is forecast to remain away from land.

The Category 1 storm was located about 1,500 kilometres west-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula of Mexico, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect. Gilma had strengthened to tropical storm status on Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
