Montreal weather: There’s a blue moon on Monday — and a special weather statement

The super blue moon that will rise Monday has many names, according to NASA: supermoon; blue moon; Sturgeon Moon; Red, Corn, Green Corn, Barley, Herb, Grain, or Dog Moon; Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi Purnima; and Tu B’Av.

The moon will be visible until Wednesday in some parts of the world, but probably not in the Montreal area, which is covered by a special weather statement.

Significant rainfall and scattered thunderstorms are predicted for Monday, with precipitation accumulations over 40 millimetres, according to Environment Canada. The rain could exacerbate flooding or ponding where ground is already saturated.

Rain will continue until at least Wednesday, according to Environment Canada’s long-term forecast. The sun could return in time for the last weekend before school starts.

A super moon happens when it appears large because it is closer than usual to Earth. A blue moon is the second full moon in one calendar month.

“This will be the first of four consecutive supermoons this year,” NASA says, “with the full moons in September and October virtually tied for the closest of the year.”

Expect a high of 0 C during the day, with a UV index of , or moderate. At night, a low of 6 C.
