Montreal’s Farine & Cacao named one of the top pâtisseries in the world

Farine & Cacao has been called a gem in Montreal’s Village, and now it’s official.

The pâtisserie recently won the Pastry Discovery Gem Award, an international honour bestowed by La Liste restaurant and hotel guide.

Farine & Cacao is the only Canadian showing in La Liste’s 2024 edition of the Pastry Special Awards, which sampled more than 3,000 pastry shops to find the very best.

The “treasure trove of contemporary artisanal pastry” was founded by chef Christian Campos, formerly known for his work at Pâtisserie de Gascogne, the Queen Elizabeth Hotel and La Palette Gourmande. He was crowned Pastry Chef of the Year in 2015 and 2016 by the Société des Chefs, Cuisiniers et Pâtissiers du Québec.

“His specialties include classic viennoiseries as well as flavoured croissants … alongside handmade chocolate bars of impeccable quality,” La Liste says.

The Gem award seeks “off-map uprising pastry gem little-known or hard-to-find bakeries, afternoon teas, or dessert restaurants worth going the extra mile for.”

The mind behind the hybrid pastry the cronut, New York-based Dominique Ansel, received the Pastry Game Changer Award, while Bastien Blanc-Tailleur of Paris was crowned World’s Most Creative Pastry Chef and Antonio Bachour from Miami and Janice Wong from Singapore shared the Pastry Innovation Award.

Other Gem awards went to pastry shops in Pakistan, Peru, France and Hungary.
