Montreal police plan to close or restrict access to Sherbrooke St., between Victoria St. and Metcalfe St., for part of Monday, Oct. 7, starting at about  8 a.m., according to a message to the McGill community from the McGill Emergency Operations Centre.

Although pedestrians may be able to use Sherbrooke St. on Monday, the centre is advising the McGill community to use alternate routes to access the downtown campus and to plan for extra travel time if they have an exam, class or activity scheduled on the downtown campus.

The university has put in place security measures to restrict access to its campuses from Oct. 5 through 7 in anticipation of pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian events marking one year since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel and the start of Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.

From Oct. 5 through 7, access to McGill’s lower campus is through two points only: the McTavish entrance, on McTavish St. south of Docteur Penfield Ave., between Redpath Hall and Morrice Hall, and the Milton Gates, at Milton St. and University St.

Since Sherbrooke will be closed at McTavish, people are advised to head north on Peel St. and then east to gain access to McTavish. University St. will be open for access to the Milton Gates.

McGill community members coming to campus are reminded that they must have their McGill-issued identification in the form of a student card or an employee card.

From Oct. 5 through Oct. 7, the university’s downtown and Macdonald campuses are open only to McGill students, employees and essential visitors on university business.

Among other security measures, many classes will be held online and remote work, where possible, is required.
