Quebec’s provincial police investigated a total of 18 deaths involving fatal collisions, including four that occurred off-road or on water, over the traditional construction vacation period.
The Sûreté du Québec announced Tuesday it investigated a total of 17 fatal collisions between July 19 and Aug. 4, compared to 19 fatal collisions and 24 deaths recorded during the corresponding period last year.
“Non-compliance with signs, non-compliance with speed limits, driving impaired by drugs, alcohol or a combination of the two, as well as failure to wear safety equipment contributed to the vast majority of serious and fatal collisions this year,” the SQ said.
“For many Quebecers, summer vacations continue and the Sûreté du Québec would like to remind them to remain cautious, both on the road and during their recreational and tourism activities.”
