The Laval police have arrested a 14-year-old suspect in connection with a series of threats that led to several school lockdowns in the city over the last two weeks.

While the police department would not release details about the case, at least four schools launched precautionary lockdowns.

“The investigation is ongoing and we are not ruling out that there could be other arrests,” police spokesperson Geneviève Major said on Friday, noting several schools were targeted by the threatening calls.

Police said the suspect was arrested at his family’s home on Thursday and search warrants were executed. He was questioned by police and then appeared in Youth Court to face charges of uttering threats, mischief and violating court-ordered conditions.

The suspect will remain in custody until his next court appearance on Oct. 21.

Major stressed that despite the threats all turning out to be unfounded, the police force will maintain an increased presence at different public spaces for now.

She said the arrest should serve as an opportunity for parents to talk their children about the consequences that come with making false 911 calls or triggering police investigations with false information.

Those consequences can include criminal charges for anyone over the age of 12, she added.

“It has greater repercussions than prank calls or ringing a doorbell and running away,” Major said. “It’s not a game and shouldn’t be taken lightly.”

Anyone with any information that can further the current investigation is urged to call the Laval police tip line at 450-662-4636 or 911 and mention file LVL-241016-023.
