A 45-year-old man is facing theft charges after being arrested by Laval police in the wake of an investigation that began last August.

Alain Bernecky faces two counts of theft of more than $5,000 and was arrested on Oct. 2. He is suspected by police of having committed thefts in jewelry stores in the Montreal area, the Eastern Townships and the Centre-de-Québec region.

Bernecky came to the notice of Laval police last summer after a man entered a local jewelry store, asked to see a selection of gold chains and then grabbed what was shown to him and ran. Police said the 20 or so chains stolen in that incident were valued at $800 to $1,000 each.

Investigators allege that Bernecky committed another theft in Laval soon after that incident, and that their subsequent investigation determined he was involved in six thefts between July and September that saw nearly $100,000 worth of jewelry stolen.

Bernecky remains in custody pending his next court appearance Oct. 28.

Anyone with any information that could further the investigation is urged to call the Laval police tip line at 450-662-4636 or call 911 and mention file LVL 240812-045.
