The armed man had an altercation with three other men inside the building, Grondin said, who managed to subdue the suspect.

Police arrived and arrested a 24-year-old man, who is being questioned by investigators. Grondin said the suspect is expected to be arraigned in Chateauguay on Saturday, although she could not yet specify the charges to be laid.

All three men involved in the confrontation, who are in their 50s, received minor injuries. Only one of them had to be treated in a hospital, Grondin said.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was “disturbed” to learn of the incident in a post on X. “While we wait for more information, my thoughts are with these individuals and the entire congregation who must be very shaken right now. No one should feel afraid in their place of worship.”
