A vehicle that plunged into Rivière des Prairies in the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville early Sunday morning has been recovered, Montreal police spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant said late Sunday afternoon. No occupants of the vehicle were located, either inside or in the water.

Police arrived on the scene following a 911 call at 4:50 a.m. The vehicle was travelling north on St-Hubert St. when it crossed Avenue Park Stanley — a pedestrian street between Basile-Routhier St. and Durham Ave., on the shore of Rivière des Prairies — and plunged into the water.

One man was seen in the water near the vehicle before it was completely submerged, witnesses told police.

Montreal police tactical divers, the Montreal fire department and the Canadian Coast Guard joined the search to locate the man and to determine whether there were other occupants of the vehicle, police spokesperson Véronique Dubuc said earlier on Sunday.

Brabant said the search is now over.

The vehicle was to be towed, said Brabant, and the investigation would continue, with experts examining the vehicle to try to understand the causes and circumstances leading to it entering the water.
