Montreal police arson investigators have been assigned to probe a fire that broke out Friday morning in an apartment in the city’s east-end and left a woman in her 70s dead.

While there is no immediate indication that fire was criminally set and the cause of the blaze has yet to be determined, Montreal police routinely investigate fires in their patrol territory that involve loss of life.

Montreal firefighters called police to Aird St. near Hochelaga St. at 10:50 a.m. after a woman in her 70s was found in cardiac arrest in one of the apartments in the building. Attempts by ambulance technicians and firefighters to revive her were unsuccessful.

Damage from the flames seems to have been limited to the apartment where the fire occurred.
